How to build a Shopify product quiz that sells

A practical, step-by-step guide to a Shopify product recommendation quiz: which questions to ask, where to capture the email, and how to send each shopper to the right product.

Most Shopify stores don't have a traffic problem. They have a choice problem. When a shopper lands on a collection with 40 products, the easiest decision is to leave.

A product quiz fixes that by turning "which one is right for me?" into three to five easy questions and a confident recommendation. Done well, it also grows your email list with shoppers who already told you what they want.

When a product quiz makes sense

A quiz is worth building when at least one of these is true:

  • Your products solve different needs. Skincare by skin type, supplements by goal, coffee by taste, apparel by fit.
  • Shoppers ask the same questions in support chat. Those questions are your quiz.
  • You run paid social. Cold traffic converts better into a quiz than into a product page.
  • You want better email segmentation. Every answer is a segment.

If you sell one product in one variant, a quiz won't help much. A clear product page will.

Step 1: list the decisions, not the questions

Before writing questions, write down how you'd recommend a product in person. For example:

  • Dry skin → hydrating routine
  • Oily skin → balancing routine
  • Sensitive skin → gentle routine
  • Wants anti-aging → add the serum

Each branch in that list is a real decision. Those are the only questions that must be in the quiz. Everything else is optional.

Step 2: open with the easiest, most visual question

The first question has one job: get the first tap. Use photo tiles or cards with images:

  • "Which look feels most like you?"
  • "What's your skin type?" with close-up photos
  • "What's your main goal?" with lifestyle imagery

Images make answers faster and more accurate. People recognize themselves before they read.

Step 3: keep the middle short and relevant

Three to six questions is the sweet spot for most stores. Mix formats:

  • Single choice with advance on tap for speed.
  • Multi-select for concerns ("Choose all that apply"), with an exclusive "None of these".
  • A quick info step between questions, like a short stat about your ingredients or a customer quote.

If a question doesn't change the recommendation or the copy on the result, remove it.

Step 4: branch only where the product changes

Branching lets you ask follow-ups that only make sense for some shoppers. Someone looking for anti-aging might see a question about fine lines; someone with oily skin won't.

Keep branches short and rejoin the main journey. In InteractiveFunnel you open an answer and click Branch to a new path. The path gets its own steps and returns to the next main step automatically.

Step 5: capture the email at the right moment

Ask for name and email after the questions and before the result. Frame it as delivery:

"Your routine is ready. Where should we send it, plus a code for your first order?"

An analysis loader right before this step helps a lot. A short "matching products to your answers" screen makes the result feel earned, and it's a natural place to ask one or two yes-or-no questions.

Step 6: make the result page do the selling

The result page is your highest-intent page. Make it count:

  • Personal headline. "Ana, your routine for dry, sensitive skin."
  • Why this product. Two or three bullets tied to their answers.
  • Social proof. A testimonial from someone with the same need.
  • One clear button to the product page, the collection, or a pre-filled cart link.
  • Optional urgency. A countdown for a first-order discount, if the offer is real.

Connecting the quiz to your store

You don't need a Shopify app to run a great quiz:

  • Host it on your domain, like quiz.yourstore.com, and link it from your header, homepage hero and ads.
  • Send shoppers to products with a button on each result. Use UTM parameters on those links so your store analytics attribute the sale.
  • Send leads to your email tool. Export CSV, or use webhooks to push each lead with all answers to Klaviyo or another email tool through Zapier or Make, then trigger flows by answer.

What to measure

  • Start rate: visitors who answer the first question.
  • Completion rate by step, to find the question that loses people.
  • Result click-through: how many click the product button.
  • Revenue from quiz leads in your email flows over 30 days.

Change one thing at a time: the opening question, the loader, the result headline.
