Web-to-app funnels: how subscription apps turn ads into paying users

Why subscription apps run onboarding quizzes on the web before the install, how the flow works end to end, and how to build one without a web team.

If you've clicked an ad for a fitness, meditation or learning app recently, you probably didn't land in the App Store. You landed in a quiz on the web: your age, your goal, a few questions about your habits, a "building your plan" screen, and finally a personalized plan with a price.

That's a web-to-app funnel. It has become a standard growth channel for subscription apps, and it's worth understanding even if you're not a big app company.

What is a web-to-app funnel?

A web-to-app funnel moves the first part of your onboarding from the app to the web:

  1. A paid ad sends the visitor to a web page, not the app store.
  2. The visitor completes an onboarding quiz on the web.
  3. The funnel shows a personalized plan and an offer.
  4. The visitor pays on the web or continues to install the app.
  5. After installing, they log in to an account that already knows their answers.

Why apps run onboarding on the web

  • Personalize before the install. A plan built from their answers is a stronger reason to download and pay than a store listing.
  • Faster iteration. Change a question or an offer in minutes, without an app release or review.
  • Your own checkout. Where it's allowed and makes sense for your business, selling on the web gives you more control over pricing, trials and payment flows.
  • Better measurement. Web analytics and attribution are simpler than in-app tracking for many teams.

The anatomy of a web-to-app onboarding quiz

Identity questions first

Open with age, gender or life stage as photo tiles. It's easy, it's visual, and it immediately makes the experience feel personal.

Goal and motivation

"What's your main goal?" is usually the most important branching question. It decides which middle steps someone sees and which plan they'll get.

Habits and context

Questions about routines, time available and past attempts. Rated statements ("I usually eat while watching TV") feel like a real assessment and give you copy for the result.

Empathy and proof steps

Short info screens between questions keep momentum: "You're not alone — 7 in 10 people feel this way" (use your own data), a testimonial, or a before-and-after story.

The analysis loader

A screen that "builds the plan" with progress bars, rotating reviews and two or three yes-or-no questions mid-load. It raises anticipation and makes the email step feel natural. See The analysis loader.

Email, then the plan

Ask for email to "save your plan", then show a result that uses their answers: "Ana, your 28-day plan focuses on belly and arms." End with one offer and one button.

Branching without complexity

Different goals need different middle steps. A weight-loss visitor might be asked about their target weight; someone building habits might be asked about their schedule.

Branch on the goal, keep each path short, and rejoin the main flow before the loader. That keeps the funnel easy to maintain and your analytics easy to read. More in Branching logic without the spaghetti.

Handing off to purchase and the app

The end of the funnel is a link:

  • To your web checkout or paywall page.
  • To the app store, with the plan already saved to the account.
  • To a download page with deep links.

With webhooks, every lead and every answer can be sent to your backend as soon as it's submitted, so the account knows the answers when the user opens the app.

Metrics that matter

  • Cost per completed quiz, not just cost per click.
  • Step-by-step drop-off, to find the question that loses people.
  • Conversion by path, to see which goals produce paying users.
  • Email-to-purchase rate for those who didn't buy right away.

Build a web-to-app funnel this week

InteractiveFunnel includes the building blocks top subscription apps use: photo answers, rated statements, one-click paths that rejoin, {{name}} personalization, analysis loaders with questions, countdown offers and webhooks. Responses are unlimited on every plan, so scaling your ads never raises your tool bill per lead.
